British Values Statement
Bingley Grammar School is deeply committed to serving its community. The school embraces the belief that at the heart of a modern, ever-changing, multi-cultural, and multi-faith community is the acceptance of key British values, which it is our responsibility to promote. In doing so, our learners will be able to grow as individuals and active citizens in the community and country in which they live.
Our school sits at the heart of a vibrant region, proudly drawing students from across the distinct catchment areas of Bingley itself and parts of Keighley and Bradford. This unique geographic and cultural blend provides a rich tapestry of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We believe that preparing students for life in modern Britain is achieved not only through the curriculum but also through the school’s core values and ethos, as well as its provision for students beyond formal lessons.
Central to the advocacy of British values are the school’s core values:
Respect: Nurturing an environment where every individual is valued, and diverse viewpoints across our communities are celebrated.
Commitment: Dedicating ourselves to personal growth, civic duty, and the shared pursuit of excellence.
Collaboration: Working together constructively across our diverse catchment to build a cohesive, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
These values guide and drive the direction of the school’s improvement and are fundamental in supporting the development of British values.
The government set out its definition of “British Values” in its “Prevent Strategy”, which includes the values of:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
The Essential Role of the Form Time Overview
Integral to our delivery of these principles is the structured Form time overview, which serves as a daily foundation for character education, personal growth, and active citizenship. Form time provides the dedicated space needed to develop and embed the practical skills and confidence students require to understand and champion British values.
Key Stage 3 (Year 7 & Year 8) - LORIC Skill Foundations (Leadership, Organisation, Resilience, Initiative, Communication) Students explicitly learn and practice these core attributes during registration. This targeted pastoral curriculum builds the personal efficacy, mutual respect, and collaborative skills necessary to become responsible citizens.
Key Stage 4 & Upper Years (e.g., Year 10) Student Voice & Peer Leadership. The focus shifts from character development to active leadership. Students become the true voice of the school, taking ownership of major platforms to educate, inspire, and lead their peers.
A vital manifestation of this model occurs in Year 10, where students step into prominent leadership roles by planning and delivering online assemblies to their year group. Progressing from this, students select a specific strand of British Values and compose a comprehensive online assembly delivered to the entire school. This powerful initiative provides a genuine vehicle for Student Voice, empowering young people to articulate, deconstruct, and explain complex British values in their own words, fostering deep peer-to-peer connection and community cohesion.
